Video games every day: 67% of Americans play every week
08.06.26
The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has released a detailed new report that reveals the incredible influence the gaming industry has on American society. Video games have officially transformed from a niche hobby to a massive cultural phenomenon that blurs the lines between ages and social groups. Practically every large social group of the population is to one degree or another involved in playing interactive entertainment titles.
The material is based on the annual large-scale study Essential Facts About the US Video Game Industry 2026. This seminal document is prepared annually by the ESA to assess player behavior, analyze audience engagement and measure general demographics within the US gaming industry.
Gamer statistics
According to the results of a large-scale study, 212.3 million US citizens between the ages of 5 and 90 play video games regularly (at least one hour a week). Today, gamers make up 67% of the total population of the United States. The continuous development of the industry is noticeable: compared to the previous reporting period (2025), the indicator increased by another 7.2 million gamers, which is equal to an audience increase of 3% per year.

Portrait of an American gamer
The peak degree of involvement in game content is, of course, noticed among the younger generations. In the age group of 5–13 years (Generation Alpha) and among young people aged 14–29 years (Generation Z), more than 80% of respondents are interested in gaming. Similar results are shown by representatives of mature generations:
- among the millions, 71% play;
- in generation X, the share of gamers is 56%;
- baby boomers are fascinated by games by exactly half (50%);
- even among the elderly aged 81 to 90, as many as 32% of citizens remain stable players.
If you look at the gender balance of power, men now make up 53% of the total player audience, while women make up 46%. An interesting feature of the statistics is observed in the generation of baby boomers: the number of women who are fond of interactive leisure was more than men of the same group – 52% of female gamers compared to 47% of male gamers.

Why American adults play: specific effects of video games
A new social survey confirms the unequivocal positive impact of the gaming industry on the everyday state of citizens. Adult gamers answered the question why they play:
- 85% – for classical entertainment;
- 81% – to receive bright joyful emotions;
- 79% – as an easy and useful brain training;
- 78% — as a means of successfully relieving psychological stress and anxiety.
Teenagers and young people (representatives of Gen Z) have a prominent place in the factor of socialization: 88% of respondents recognize the socialization function of interactive games, and another 87% openly declare that joint network matches facilitate the search for real loyal friends and the expansion of the company of communication.
The conclusions regarding the simulation of real sports activity turned out to be very unusual. Approximately 89% of surveyed Americans who combine active training with digital sports simulators emphasized that virtual games have a positive effect on the quality of performing physical techniques and increase success in real sports.
Gaming is also notable value for money. 63% of involved consumers directly confirm that the interactive digital world is able to provide incomparably greater recreational benefits per unit of invested financial funds, unlike paid movie services, literature or subscriptions to audio content.
Popular devices and benefits
The smartphone, with its 80% of gamers on board, holds the throne of the undisputed platform leader in all categories of research. Stationary personal computers (PCs) and game consoles, according to the ESA, mainly remain the area of interest of young people who are part of the three progressive gaming generations — Alpha, Gen Z, and also representatives of the generation of millions.
