The Witcher 3 will get a continuation of Geralt’s story in the Songs of the Past DLC

Return of the White Wolf: CD Projekt RED 3

A year after the legendary release of the cult role-playing game in 2015, the studio CD Projekt RED made an unexpected announcement, presenting a new plot addition The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past (Songs of the past). The cult RPG, which managed to gather a multi-million fan base around the world, will receive another portion of new official content.

The Songs of the Past project is positioned as the third major addition after the monumental DLCs “Hearts of Stone” and “Blood and Wine”. The original game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt sold more than 60 million copies during its successful run on the market. The project’s track record includes more than 250 Game of the Year titles and a total of more than 1,000 industry honors over the franchise’s 11-year history. The upcoming story expansion will continue this legendary bar of script quality.

The long-awaited addition

The news about the announcement of the “Songs of the Past” expansion came as a surprise to the industry. The new story DLC aims to bring players back to the amazing fantasy universe and give them the opportunity to once again feel themselves in the role of the legendary monster slayer. A teaser image featuring Geralt and a mysterious ancient creature wrapped in tree roots gives fans a reason to build a lot of theories about another exciting story challenge and a new game area.

Players must return to direct control of Geralt of Rivia. The narrator of the project dispels previous network speculations about a possible Ciri gameplay. The expansion “Songs of the Past” is created at a high technical level for modern platforms. It will be possible to play the novelty on personal computers (PC), as well as on home consoles of the new generation PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The project is optimized taking into account advanced graphics technologies.

Development team

The authors from CD Projekt RED are not working alone on the development of the “Songs of the Past” project. Their partner is the well-known Polish team Fool’s Theory. The studio was founded by Jakub Rokosh, who at one time held the position of leading quest designer of the original Wild Hunt. Right now, they are hard at work on the unannounced official remake of the very first The Witcher, and have a huge backlog of work and helping colleagues in the development of such industry superhits as Divinity: Original Sin II, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, and the legendary RPG.

Release date

The developers have already established approximate time guidelines for the fan community. The app is scheduled for release in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The creators promised to make an expanded array of new information public by the end of the summer of 2026. However, the first additional insights can be heard on the official stream on May 28 in honor of the anniversary of Blood and Wine. An equally important milestone for fans of the franchise will be June 2026 – that’s when CD Project RED intends to present The Witcher 4.
