OpenAI adds plugins with ready-made functions to ChatGPT

OpenAI is introducing plugin support in Codex — its coding tool. With these plugins, users can integrate external services, apply pre-built workflows, and tailor the AI’s operation to specific tasks. Previously, these features had to be implemented manually; now they are available through simple installation.

Package structure

Plugins come as packages that include skills (special prompts for workflows), app integrations, and MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers. They make working with Codex convenient, repeatable, and suitable for team use.

Plugins section and marketplace

The Codex app now features a Plugins section, containing integrations with services like GitHub, Gmail, Box, Cloudflare, and Vercel. OpenAI plans to expand the catalog with new plugins, and users will be able to connect their own solutions. The section’s structure resembles the Claude Code marketplace, which is already popular with developers.

Competitive environment

According to analysts, OpenAI is catching up to Anthropic and Google: plugin functions are already implemented in Claude Code and Gemini and are actively used by developers. Codex is now aimed not only at a narrow group of programmers but also at a wider audience.

Not just programming

Some plugins are designed not only for coding tasks but also for other intellectual tasks, including office and analytical work. Codex is becoming a tool for a variety of business and work processes.

Availability and documentation

Plugins are already available in the Codex app. Detailed installation and CLI usage instructions are published on OpenAI’s website, helping developers quickly integrate new features and services.
