Intel changes strategy: software optimization as a response to AMD X3D technology
01.05.26
The competition in the market of game processors reaches a new level: Intel plans to push AMD Ryzen with 3D V-Cache technology not only with the power of iron, but also with deep software settings. As Intel Vice President Robert Hallock said, software solutions are the key to unlocking the potential of modern CPUs in low-latency tasks.
New strategy
The main focus of Intel is now shifting towards optimizing the interaction of the processor with games. According to the company’s management, specialists often underestimate the role of software. Even an excessive number of cores or gigantic amounts of cache will not bring the desired gaming experience if the software code is not optimized for a specific architecture.
Software optimization instead of increasing cache
Robert Hallock emphasized that the large amount of cache memory, which has become a hallmark of the AMD X3D series, is critical only in a limited number of scenarios – where there are many random requests to memory. Modern programming interfaces (APIs) increasingly demonstrate performance gains not from the physical size of the chip, but from the execution of instructions and minimization of delays.
In future products, Intel plans to implement a number of changes aimed at dramatically reducing latency. In particular, the improved “thread director” will be extremely effective for multi-core systems.
Binary Optimization Tool and its capabilities
One of the key technological innovations will be the Binary Optimization Tool (BOT). According to Intel, this development is able to increase performance in modern games and heavy applications by 30%, regardless of the amount of hardware cache. BOT will be a critical element of the company’s strategy to maintain leadership in the desktop and notebook PC market.
Nova Lake release date
While Intel is betting on software, a hardware response to 3D V-Cache is also in development. Own vertical cache stacking technology may appear in Nova Lake series processors. The release of these novelties is expected at the end of 2024. This will be an important milestone for the company, which also simultaneously prepares specialized chips for portable consoles (Steam Deck competitors) and challenges NVIDIA in the GPU market.
