In the US, the fight against AI applications for generating intimate images has begun

San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu initiated the process to force the removal of 13 applications designed to create intimate images using neural networks. In his opinion, the activity of these services directly violates the laws of California on the fight against deepfake pornography.

What are these programs and how do they work?

There are 13 specific software products in question: 8 of them are in the App Store, and another 5 are in Google Play. Developers deliberately use deceptive tactics: they position their software as ordinary programs for “replacing persons”, and the functionality for creating sexualized content is hidden, opening access only after installation.

Position of the prosecutor and claims against corporations

David Chiu emphasizes that generating intimate content without the user’s consent is illegal and unacceptable. The prosecutor harshly criticized the IT giants: Apple and Google, according to him, received millions of dollars as commission deductions from the activities of these “undressing applications” and are now obliged to radically revise their approaches to content moderation.

Google and Apple answer

Google representative Dan Jackson said that the company is already fighting against such content. At the moment, hundreds of applications that violate the rules of the security policy have been removed, including the five Android applications that the prosecutor pointed to. Google also introduced restrictions on searches related to terms such as “nudify”. There was no official comment from Apple at the time of publication.

Scale of the problem: revenue and coverage

The situation is systemic. Even at the beginning of 2026, research showed depressing data about the popularity of such solutions in digital stores:

Statistics of the market of “undressing” neural networks

Field Number of programs detected Number of downloads Received income
App Store 47
Google Play 55
Total 102 more than 705 million 117 million dollars (4.75 billion UAH)

The revenue figure of 117 million dollars (4.75 billion UAH) demonstrates how profitable it is for corporations to support these services, which only fuels the anger of regulators.
