Claude Code 2.1.224 Brings Cross-Session Messaging and Self-Hosted Runners

New features in Claude Code: cross-session communication and data handling

Anthropic has released a major update to Claude Code, version 2.1.224, featuring 31 separate improvements. The key new feature is the ability to send messages between active AI agent sessions, streamlining parallel task management. Furthermore, enterprise users can now deploy Claude Code on their own infrastructure.

Inter-Session Messaging

The new functionality eliminates the need to manually copy context between terminal windows. Interaction is facilitated by two new tools:

  • ListAgents: designed to find other active sessions running on your local machine.
  • SendMessage: enables the actual transmission of messages.

Messages arrive as a specialized card containing a link to the sender. According to Anthropic’s official documentation, only text data is transmitted. Conversation history, file access, and permissions remain strictly contained within the original session—messages cannot autonomously modify settings or authorize requests.

Security and Use Cases

Messaging remains a strictly local process on a single device and does not require sending data to Anthropic’s servers. The feature is highly effective for notifying other processes of changes or handing off tasks. For users requiring multi-device workflows, the Remote Control feature allows synchronization of Mac terminals with the Claude mobile apps for iOS and Android.

Limitations and Compatibility

Key restrictions to keep in mind:

  • The feature is available exclusively for macOS and Linux users.
  • Windows support is currently not provided.
  • Claude Code version 2.1.224 or higher is required.

New Enterprise Features: claude self-hosted-runner

Version 2.1.224 includes a total of 31 changes. One of the highlights is the claude self-hosted-runner command. It enables Team and Enterprise plan customers to deploy Claude Code on their own servers, bypassing reliance on Anthropic’s cloud infrastructure entirely.

Version 2.1.224 Summary

Feature Description
Inter-session messaging Data transfer between terminals via ListAgents and SendMessage
Self-hosted runner Run agents on private servers (Team and Enterprise plans)
Update Scale 31 total changes included
OS Support macOS and Linux

Claude Code 2.1.224 significantly expands the capabilities for parallel agent workflows. Inter-session messaging simplifies task coordination, while the self-hosted runner provides crucial control over infrastructure and data processing for enterprise clients.
